September is National Gum Health Awareness Month đڎâ¨
Fun fact...

What is gum recession?
Simply put, itâs when your gums pull away from your teeth, exposing the roots. Thatâs why some people appear to have âlong teeth.â But itâs not just cosmeticâexposed roots can cause painful tooth sensitivity and increase the risk of serious gum disease.
Why does gum recession happen?
In men:
Hormonal differences play a role. Estrogen offers women some anti-inflammatory protection that men donât have. Lifestyle factorsâlike smoking, heavy drinking, inconsistent dental care, or poor oral hygieneâalso increase plaque buildup, which can push gum disease forward.
In women:
Hormones again are key.
-
Pregnancy: Increased inflammation and blood flow make gums extra sensitive to plaque.
-
Menopause: Falling estrogen levels can cause dry mouth (a risk factor for decay and gum disease) and even bone loss in the jaw, which weakens the foundation for your teeth.
Natural ways to support gum health đż
-
Sunlight + Vitamin D
Sunshine helps your body produce vitamin D, which is critical for absorbing calcium and phosphorusâminerals that strengthen teeth and bone. Vitamin D also supports healing and tissue repair, slowing down gum loss. -
Saltwater rinse
Mix Celtic salt with warm water and swish for 2 minutes. This simple rinse helps calm irritation and inflammation. It wonât reverse recession, but it can give your gums some relief. -
Eucalyptus oil
This natural oil is both anti-inflammatory and tissue-supportive. Research suggests it can even help stimulate new gum growth while protecting against further recession. -
Hydrogen peroxide rinse
According to Dr. Michael Onyema, DDS at Edgemere Dental, mixing 60ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 60ml of water can help fight bacteria and soothe sore, swollen gums. Swish for 30 seconds, 2â3 times a week (donât swallow). -
